Taxation       The increase in taxation for county purposes has probably more than kept pace with the increase in population since the formation of the county. The first account of the treasurer in 1812 showed receipts of $317.12. The first county tax levied in 1812 was $2500. The following figures show the amounts raised at various periods for county purposes: 1812, $2500; 1833, $8000; 1844, $6000; 1850, $10,000; 1855, $18,000; 1860, $20,000; 1870, $25,000; 1873, $35,000; 1878, $28,000. The tax for 1879 is something less than for the previous year.
